¿Cómo pueden conmemorar? El establecimiento del Estado de Israel hace sesenta años fue un proyecto colonial y de colonos que sistemática y violentamente arrancó a más de 750.000 palestinos de sus tierras y de sus hogares. Hace sesenta años las milicias y bandas sionistas saquearon las propiedades palestinas y destruyeron miles de pueblos palestinos. ¿Cómo pueden conmemorar semejante catástrofe unas personas de conciencia?
En su sesenta aniversario Israel es un Estado que continúa negando a los refugiados palestinos su derecho sancionado por Naciones Unidas a retornar a sus hogares y a recibir compensaciones, simplemente porque son «no-judíos». Violando muchas resoluciones de Naciones Unidas, Israel continúa ocupando tierras palestinas y árabes. Continúa negando de manera flagrante a los palestinos derechos humanos fundamentales, contraviniendo tanto el derecho humanitario internacional como las convenciones de derechos humanos. Todavía somete a sus propios ciudadanos palestinos a un sistema de discriminación institucionalizada muy similar al del desaparecido régimen de apartheid en Sudáfrica. E Israel puede hacer todo esto gracias a la inmunidad sin precedentes que le otorga el ilimitado y generoso apoyo económico, diplomático, político y académico tanto por parte de Estados Unidos como por parte de la Unión Europea.
Dada esta opresión multifacética que es la realidad de Israel hoy, consideramos que toda participación árabe o internacional, ya sea individual o institucional, en cualquier actividad que contribuya directa o indirectamente a las «conmemoraciones» del establecimiento de Israel está en connivencia con la perpetuación de la desposesión y del desarraigo de los refugiados, con la prolongación de la ocupación y con la profundización del apartheid israelí. Por ejemplo, invitar a Israel como «invitado de honor» a las Ferias de Turín y de París no sólo es una traición deliberada a los principios básicos de los derechos humanos, incluyendo aquellos que consagran las leyes de la propia Unión Europea, sino que también es un intento deliberado de encubrir los crímenes que comete Israel contra el pueblo árabe, especialmente sus sucesivos crímenes de guerra cometidos en Líbano y Palestina y sus actos de lento genocidio contra un millón y medio de palestinos que viven en la Gaza asediada y castigada colectivamente. En resumen, conmemorar el «sesenta aniversario de Israel» equivale a bailar sobre las tumbas palestinas.
Instamos a todos los integrantes de la sociedad civil internacional, en particular a instituciones e individuos que trabajan en los ámbitos de las artes, académico, de los deportes, a sindicatos y comunidades religiosas, a boicotear las conmemoraciones del «sesenta aniversario de Israel» dondequiera que se celebren en el mundo. Por definición estas conmemoraciones insultan nuestra historia, violan nuestros derechos y ahondan nuestra opresión. También hacen que el camino a la justicia, la libertad, la igualdad y a una paz duradera basada en el derecho internacional sea más largo que nunca.
